Human stem cell research holds enormous potential for contributing to our understanding of fundamental human biology. Although it is not possible to predict the outcomes from basic research, such studies will offer the real possibility for treatments and ultimately for cures for many diseases for which adequate therapies do not exist.
Research on stem cells includes both basic and applied aspects. Currently this technology has potential for therapy through regeneration of tissues or implantation of cell and tissues in Nervous system diseases (e.g. Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s, Multiple sclerosis, spinal cord etc.), Bone and Cartilage diseases, Cancer and immune diseases, Cardiac diseases, Kidney diseases, Diabetes etc. and burns.
The development of efficient in vitro differentiation protocols for human embryonic stem cells towards various cell types is rapidly progressing. However, clinical applicability can only be established after intensive laboratory studies that should elaborate on the safety and effectiveness of these stem cell-derived transplants. Moreover, although immune-mediated rejection of transplanted allogenic hES cell-derived grafts might be inhibited using immunosuppressive drugs, much research still needs to be done towards the achievement of a life-long immunological tolerance after transplantation. Stem cell creation is an approach to stem cell therapy, which is at least theoretically, the one with the most desirable long-term benefits. It is also the furthest from practical application.
In view of the above, Kidney Foundation, KLES Hospital & MRC is organized a national seminar on Stem Cell Research and Therapy on 12th May 2007, at KLES Hospital & MRC, Belgaum.
